KCTU to Campaign Against NMD-TMD
Korean Committee Against NMD-TMD and for Peace Launched
Forty (40) people's organisations, civil society organisations, peace and reunification movement organisations, came together to form the "Korean Committee Against NMD-TMD and for Peace".
The list of conveners of the NMD-TMD campaign, distributed to the press following the founding meeting on April 9 resembled "who's who" of the progressive organisations in south Korea.
The Anti-NMD-TMD Committee, in its inaugural meeting of the representatives of the participating organisations, adopted a founding declaration, open letters to the U.S. President and the political leaders of south and north Korea, and programme of activities to be undertaken this year.
The founding declaration reflected the common understanding of the participating organisations that the U.S. ballistic missile defense strategy expressed in NMD-TMD is adding fuel to dangerous global arms race and that Korea as a whole would become its mostly affected victim as it will derail the opportunity and progress towards peace in the Korean peninsula.
The leaders appealed to the people of Korea to unite as one force for peace and prevent the NMD-TMD deployment through solidarity with all peace loving people of the world.
The Anti-NMD-TMD Committee will organise various workshops, public hearings, street actions, and international initiatives to contribute to the global movement against the resurrection of Cold War inherent in the NMD-TMD strategy.
The founding meeting inducted KCTU president Dan Byung-ho, Fr. Moon Jeung-hyun (People's Action for Reform of Unjust ROK-U.S. SOFA Agreement), Monk Beubryun (Good Friends), Oh Jong-ryul (National Alliance for Democracy and Reunification in Korea), Lee-Kim Hyun-sook (Women Making Peace), Lee Jong-lin (South headquarter Pan-Korean Alliance for Reunification, Korean National Congress for Reunification), Chung Kwang-hoon (Korean Farmers League), Chi Eun-hee (Korean Womens Associations United), Choi Yul (Korean Federation for Environmental Movement), Rev. Hong Keun-soo (Council for National Reconciliation, Self-Reliance, and Reunification of Korea) as the standing chairpersons of the Committee. It also decided to organise "policy research team", "weapons purchase monitoring team", "international solidarity team", "action and cultural activities team", "organising team", and "publicity and information team" to consolidate the activities of the Committee.
